That’s what I mean when I say that we live in a Christ-haunted world. A haunting presence is not the same as a full presence. It’s a feeling that someone is simultaneously here and not here, everywhere and nowhere. It’s a presence you feel, but can’t quite pin down. It’s a familiar mystery. Jesus’s question to his disciples, “But who do you say that I am?” still echoes in our world, no matter how post-Christian that world sometimes seems to be.
