Between the Lines: Pentecost 4: July 10, 2011

Text: Genesis 25:19-34

Only one of the twins can “own” the birthright. It “belongs” to Esau, as firstborn, but he sells it for bread and lentil stew. What is your birthright? What assumptions about “rights” do you inherit from your family? What obligations and responsibilities are part of it? What privileges and entitlements come with it?

What do you know of Esau’s attitude toward his place in the world? What do you know of Jacob’s attitude?

Take a few moments and write out a conversation between the two brothers within yourself. What might they say to each other?
